    Small, but self-sufficient: The place lives off what the island produces – seafood, sheep's cheese, honey, wine.

    King George Whiting, Marron, and oysters come from the island or the surrounding waters. In the harbourside eateries, the catch usually lands on your plate the same day.

    On the Dudley Peninsula, several Cellar Doors are within driving distance, plus businesses with gin and liqueurs made from bush ingredients. Kangaroo Island is also known for Ligurian bees, whose honey is only produced here.

    Cafes and a general store meet daily needs, but for larger shopping, head to Kingscote. Plan accordingly – the island's western half has scarce provisions.

    Arrival PointLocated on the eastern tip of Kangaroo Island, Penneshaw is the first point of contact for most visitors, as this is where the mainland ferry docks. The small town boasts a few streets above Hog Bay, offering views back to the Fleurieu Peninsula. Those who drive straight through miss out on the island's most peaceful part.Penguins and LighthouseLittle Penguins, the world's smallest penguin species, live on the coast just outside town, coming ashore after nightfall. A twenty-minute drive east, Cape Willoughby is home to South Australia's oldest lighthouse, operational since 1852 – built after the passage between the island and mainland had claimed too many ships.

    Getting HereThe Cape Jervis ferry (Fleurieu Peninsula) takes approx. 45 minutes and carries vehicles. Without a car, shuttles are available to Kingscote and American River. The island's only airport, near Kingscote, is about an hour's drive.On the IslandThere's no public transport, taxis, or ride-sharing; without your own or a rented vehicle, you'll rely on guided tours. Main roads are paved, but many secondary roads are not. Drive extra carefully at dusk: kangaroos and wallabies are then on the roads, accounting for most island accidents.
