    1Muskoka Chautauqua

    Muskoka Chautauqua is a cultural organization rooted in the historic Chautauqua movement – summer programs of education, literature, and music that shaped Muskoka in the 1920s. Today, it hosts readings, concerts, and lectures. Check the current program before visiting, as there's little to see on site without an event.

    2Port Carling Wall

    The Wall is a large mural in the village center of Port Carling, right by the locks. From afar, it depicts the steamship Sagamo passing through the lock; up close, you'll discover it's made up of approximately 9,000 historical photographs from the region's life. A quick stop that combines well with a view of the lock operations.

    3Dee Bank Falls

    The Dee Bank Falls are a small waterfall on the Dee River near Windermere, northeast of Port Carling. The water falls in several stages over the granite of the Canadian Shield. The side trip from the road is short; the river flows fullest in spring after the snowmelt.

    The Deck, Summer Poolside Bistro

    The Deck is the summer poolside bistro of the JW Marriott The Rosseau Muskoka Resort in Minett, approximately ten minutes' drive northwest of Port Carling. Pizza and other uncomplicated dishes are served on the terrace above Lake Rosseau. It is open only during the warmer months and weather permitting – a spot for a relaxed lakeside lunch, not a lavish dinner.

    Pie Wood Fired Pizza Joint

    Pie Wood Fired Pizza Joint on Medora Street is the Port Carling branch of a small pizzeria chain from Ontario. The pizzas are wood-fired and often feature unusual toppings; salads and beer are also available. The atmosphere is relaxed and family-friendly – a great choice after a stroll through the town center or a day on the water. In summer, there can be waiting times in the evenings.

    Iron and String Restaurant

    The Iron and String Restaurant is located on Golf Avenue Road near Windermere, a few kilometers east of Port Carling on Lake Rosseau, directly next to a golf course. It's a quiet spot away from the town center, ideal for lunch or dinner after a round of golf or a drive around the lake. Check opening hours beforehand – many establishments in Muskoka have limited opening hours outside the summer season.

    The Lakes Bar and Lounge is part of the JW Marriott The Rosseau Muskoka Resort in Minett on Lake Rosseau. The hotel lounge serves North American dishes, shareable bites, and drinks – handy for resort guests or after a day on the lake. About a ten-minute drive from Port Carling.

    History

    The first lock was built in the 1870s, when steamships opened up the lakes. Shipyards in Port Carling like Duke Boats built wooden boats here, which are now sought-after collector's items. The small Muskoka Lakes Museum tells of shipbuilding and summer retreats.

    Arrival

    Port Carling is located on Highway 118 between Bracebridge and Highway 400, approximately 2.5 hours from Toronto. Public transportation options are limited.
