    The Main Mosque of Kuah is centrally located in the town and was opened in 1959 by Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman. Its architecture combines motifs and carvings from Uzbekistan with traditional Malay elements. Visitors should respect prayer times and wear appropriate clothing.

    Langkawi's iconic landmark stands right at the ferry port: a roughly twelve-meter-high sculpture of a reddish-brown eagle, poised for flight. The island's name is often explained with helang (eagle) and kawi (reddish-brown). The spot is most beautiful in the late afternoon, when the heat subsides.

    The waterfront park, opened in 1996, next to Eagle Square, is located on approximately 50 hectares of reclaimed land. 17 sculptures tell the island's legends, such as the legend of Mahsuri, along with artificial lakes and a small beach. Wide paths by the water are suitable for an evening stroll, but shade is scarce during the day.

    Culture and History

    From Fishing Village to Main TownKuah was for a long time a small fishing village. Its name means 'sauce' in Malay: A legend tells of the two giants, Mat Raya and Mat Cincang, who, during a dispute, spilled a pot of sauce that landed right here. Today, the island's two highest mountains are named after them. With the introduction of duty-free status in 1987, Kuah grew into Langkawi's administrative and shopping hub; since 2001, the town has held municipality status.The population is predominantly Malay and Muslim, with Chinese and Indian families also residing here. During the fasting month of Ramadan, bazaars offer dishes for breaking the fast in the late afternoon.

    Travel and on the Go

    Ferries from Kuala Kedah (approx. one hour) and Kuala Perlis dock at Jetty Point, right by Eagle Square. There's currently no direct ferry from Penang.From the airport near Pantai Cenang, you can reach Kuah by Grab or taxi.Explore the waterfront centre on foot; for shopping malls along the main road, Grab is more convenient.Rental cars and scooters are available at the ferry port.

    Langkawi is an archipelago of 99 islands off the northwest coast of Malaysia, just before the border with Thailand. You go there for gently sloping sandy beaches, rainforest-covered mountains, and boat tours through mangroves between limestone cliffs. The main island offers beaches like Pantai Cenang and Tanjung Rhu, waterfalls, and the cable car up Gunung Mat Cincang. Since 2007, the archipelago has been a UNESCO Global Geopark. Since 1987, Langkawi has been a duty-free island; alcohol here is also significantly cheaper than on the mainland. Since 2021, however, duties have again been levied on tobacco products.

    The approx. 4350-hectare park in Langkawi's northeast is the largest of the three Geoforest Parks in the UNESCO Global Geopark Langkawi.     The island south of the main island is part of the Dayang Bunting Marble Geoforest Park, one of three Geoforest Parks in the UNESCO Global Geopark Langkawi. It is known for Tasik Dayang Bunting, the Lake of the Pregnant Maiden, a freshwater lake between forested limestone hills. The island is a popular stop on most island-hopping tours departing from Pantai Cenang.

    Pantai Cenang, on the southwest coast, is Langkawi's liveliest beach area. Along the long sandy beach and the parallel main road are hotels, restaurants, beach bars, and duty-free shops. The airport is just a few minutes away.

    Tanjung Rhu at Langkawi's northeast tip is a long, casuarina-fringed sandy beach with views of steep, forested islands. Unlike Pantai Cenang, there are only a few accommodations here, including two large resorts, and hardly any crowds.
