    Newtown, on the western edge of downtown, is Johannesburg's cultural district. Around Mary Fitzgerald Square are the Market Theatre, Museum Africa, and the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre, many housed in converted market and industrial buildings from the Gold City's founding era.

    Located in the former fruit market, Johannesburg's City Museum chronicles the gold mining city's history, from the 1886 gold rush to Apartheid. It also houses collections on photography and rock art.

    2Mary Fitzgerald Square

    The large square in the heart of Newtown is named after the trade unionist Mary Fitzgerald and hosts concerts and festivals. Right next door is the Market Theatre, which became known as a venue for protest theatre during apartheid.
