Cher Yam Tian is credited as the inventor; in the mid-1950s, she added chili sauce instead of tomato sauce to fried crabs and sold them from a street stall with her husband starting in 1956. The widely available, slightly tangier version today is attributed to chef Hooi Kok Wah. You usually order Chilli Crab in seafood restaurants and share it with several people.
