Lake Nakuru National Park directly borders the city of Nakuru, about 160 km northwest of Nairobi, and is considered one of East Africa's most successful rhino sanctuaries, home to both white and black rhinos. The fenced park surrounding the soda lake also protects Rothschild's giraffes, lions, and leopards, as well as hundreds of bird species. The once famous flamingo flocks have become rarer and more unpredictable since rising water levels have diluted the lake.

    Park, World Heritage and Shift

Rhino SanctuaryThe park was established in 1961, later expanded, and declared Kenya's first rhino sanctuary in the 1980s. The fence primarily aims to deter poachers. Rothschild's giraffes were translocated here from West Kenya starting in 1977.UNESCO World Heritage SiteLake Nakuru is a Ramsar Wetland and since 2011 part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Kenya Lake System in the Great Rift Valley," along with Lake Elmenteita and Lake Bogoria.Rising Lake, Fewer FlamingosBetween 2009 and 2022, the lake's surface area grew by around 91 percent. The water became less alkaline, and the algae, which lesser flamingos feed on, significantly declined. Many birds are migrating to Lake Elmenteita, Lake Bogoria, or Lake Natron in Tanzania. The high water also flooded parts of the park's infrastructure, including the former main entrance.

    Useful Information
