Rust has been a royal free city since 1681; parts of the city wall and the Powder Tower from 1614 are preserved.

Europe's westernmost steppe lake is located in Burgenland, on the border with Hungary, and, at around 320 km², is Austria's largest lake. It is only one to two meters deep, fringed by reeds, and the heart of the Neusiedler See – Seewinkel National Park, one of Central Europe's most important bird sanctuaries.

    Landstrasse & Belvedere

In the 3rd district are the two baroque Belvedere Palaces, built in the early 18th century for Prince Eugene of Savoy. The Upper Belvedere houses the world's largest collection of paintings by Gustav Klimt, including "The Kiss," and tram line D stops right outside.

Just behind the Ring is the MuseumsQuartier, a complex of historical and modern buildings housing the Leopold Museum, mumok, Kunsthalle Wien, and Architekturzentrum. Beyond that, the 7th district begins, with small shops, cafés, and eateries.

    Leopoldstadt & Prater

The 2nd district is between Donaukanal and Danube. At the entrance to the Prater, the Riesenrad has been turning since 1897; behind it lie the Wurstelprater with its rides and the Grüner Prater's wide meadows and avenues. In the north of the district lies the Augarten.
