    Bellagio is located at the tip of the peninsula, where Lake Como divides into the arms of Como and Lecco. Staircase alleys lead from the shore up to the small old town; south and above the village lie the parks of Villas Melzi and Serbelloni.

    The Neoclassical Villa Melzi d'Eril was constructed from 1808 to 1815 for Francesco Melzi d'Eril, Vice-President of the Napoleonic Italian Republic. The park on the shore south of the town is designed in the English style and renowned for its camellias. The gardens are open daily during the season until the end of October; the villa itself is private and not accessible.

    At the peninsula's northern tip, the lake splits into the Como and Lecco arms. At the very tip, you'll find a small park and a marina, from where you can gaze at the lake arms and the mountains.

    Bellagio: Culture, Art and History

    Bellagio is located at the tip of the peninsula, where Lake Como splits into the arms of Como and Lecco. In Roman times, the site was a military base on the route to Raetia; in the Middle Ages, it was fortified. On the hill above the town, where today the Villa Serbelloni stands, lay a castle that was razed in 1375.The Villa Serbelloni originated in the 15th century and became a hotel in the second half of the 19th century; since 1959, it has belonged to the Rockefeller Foundation. The neoclassical Villa Melzi d'Eril was built for Francesco Melzi d'Eril, Vice President of the Napoleonic Italian Republic, by architect Giocondo Albertolli between 1808 and 1815.The historic center consists of narrow, paved stair alleys, the Salite, which ascend the slope from the shore. In the past, the town also thrived on silk weaving; today, tourism shapes it.

    Out and about in Bellagio

    By BoatCar and passenger ferries connect Bellagio with Varenna, Menaggio, and Cadenabbia; the crossing takes under fifteen minutes. Hydrofoils to Como, boats also to Lecco. This is the most convenient way to explore the lake.By Bus and CarBus lines run to Como (C30) and Lecco (Line 10). Bellagio lacks a train station; the nearest is Varenna-Esino-Perledo, across the lake. The roads are narrow and winding, and parking in the village is scarce.On FootThe old town, with its stairs and alleys, can only be explored on foot.
