Its strategic location at the confluence of the two lake branches made it an important point even in Roman times, even though early settlements were primarily focused on defense.The medieval era left its mark in the form of fortifications, while the flourishing period of the Renaissance and the subsequent Neoclassicism significantly shaped the landscape. Bellagio, the picturesque gem of Lake Como, is primarily a town for pedestrians. Its charming, often car-free alleys and steep staircases are best explored on foot to fully experience its unique flair. There is no metro or tram here, but the local bus network reliably connects Bellagio with surrounding towns like Como or Lecco. Bus tickets are best purchased in advance at a kiosk or via the regional transport app.For getting around the lake, ferries and hydrofoils are essential and also offer spectacular views. Multi-day ferry passes can prove practical for longer stays. Taxis are available, but are more expensive, and ride-sharing services like Uber are hardly widespread in this region. Bicycles and e-scooters are less ideal due to the hilly topography and narrow streets in the town center, however, rentals for tours in the surrounding area are available.
