    In Qunu, about 30 kilometers southwest of Mthatha, Nelson Mandela spent his childhood and is also buried here. The grave is on family land and is not freely accessible. The site has a memorial center that is part of the Nelson Mandela Museum.

    Mthatha, formerly Umtata, was the capital of the Transkei homeland, which the apartheid regime declared independent in 1976. Internationally, this was never recognized; in 1994, the territory returned to South Africa. The region is the heartland of the Xhosa. Nelson Mandela was born in nearby Mvezo in 1918.

    Mthatha has a small airport; its scheduled flights have been suspended multiple times in the past. Check before planning if flights are currently operating. Locally, minibus taxis are the main form of transport, but a rental car is more practical for visitors. You can only get around on foot in the city centre and during the day; at night, take a taxi.
