    Dürnstein

    Dürnstein

One of the main towns of the Wachau, identifiable by the white and blue tower of Dürnstein Abbey. Above the town lies the castle ruin where English King Richard the Lionheart was held after his capture.
    Wachau

    Wachau

The Danube Valley west of Vienna with wine terraces, apricot orchards, and abbeys. Between Melk, Dürnstein, and Krems, you cycle along the river, stop at wineries, or travel by boat from place to place.

The city at the eastern end of the Wachau is the gateway to the Danube Valley. Its Old Town is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Wachau Cultural Landscape; the Kunsthalle Krems on the Art Mile exhibits art from 1945.

Schönbrunn Palace, the former summer residence of the Habsburgs and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1996, lies in the 13th district on the Wien River. The palace park includes the Gloriette, with city views, and Schönbrunn Zoo, founded in 1752, the world's oldest existing zoo. The U4 takes you there in minutes.

    Döbling & Grinzing

To the north of the city lie the vineyards of the 19th district. In Grinzing and Heiligenstadt, Heurige and Buschenschanken serve wine from their own cultivation, especially Grüner Veltliner and Wiener Gemischter Satz. Beethoven once lived at the Heuriger Mayer am Pfarrplatz in Heiligenstadt.
