Giethoorn is part of the municipality of Steenwijkerland in the province of Overijssel, situated on the edge of the De Wieden nature reserve, Western Europe's largest lowland fen area. Approximately 2,900 people live here. The village stretches for about eight kilometers along a canal, from which numerous side canals branch off; characteristic are its wooden bridges. The surrounding lakes were formed by peat extraction. Giethoorn gained fame from Bert Haanstra's film "Fanfare," shot here in 1958, which triggered the influx of visitors. Today, over a million tourists visit annually – so expect activity on the water.
