’s-Hertogenbosch, briefly Den Bosch, is the capital of the province of Noord-Brabant in the south of the Netherlands, about 80 kilometers southeast of Amsterdam. You’ll come for the Gothic Sint-Janskathedraal, for a boat trip on the partly underground Binnendieze and for the traces of the painter Hieronymus Bosch, who lived here.
's-Hertogenbosch, commonly called Den Bosch, has been Noord-Brabant's capital since 1815. It has approx. 160,000 inhabitants (as of Jan 1, 2024). Founded on a sand ridge in a marshy area by the Dieze, the city received city rights in 1185 from Duke Henry I of Brabant; its medieval fortress was considered almost impregnable. The Sint-Janskathedraal, a Brabantine Gothic masterpiece, is the main attraction. The Binnendieze, a partly subterranean waterway, winds through the city, offering boat tours. Painter Hieronymus Bosch (1450–1516) hailed from here.
