Sperlonga

Sperlonga, a picturesque coastal town in Latium, is deeply rooted in Roman antiquity. Its history is inextricably linked to Emperor Tiberius, who owned a magnificent villa with a spectacular grotto here in the 1st century AD.This complex, known today as the Villa di Tiberio, once housed monumental sculptural groups depicting scenes from Homer's Odyssey, fragments of which can now be seen in the National Archaeological Museum of Sperlonga. After the fall of Rome, the town developed into a fortified fishing village during the Middle Ages.The characteristic whitewashed houses, narrow alleys, and stairs of the old town bear witness to this era and the need for protection from pirates. Architectural features like the Torre Truglia, a former watchtower at the tip of the promontory, underscore its defensive past. The local culture is still strongly shaped by the sea today, reflected in traditional fishing and culinary specialties. Sperlonga thus preserves a rich heritage, ranging from Roman splendor to medieval resilience.

Sperlonga, with its charming historic centre and picturesque beaches, is ideal for exploring on foot. The car-free old town centre is a labyrinth of narrow streets and stairs best experienced by wandering, while the promenade invites leisurely strolls.For longer distances along the coast or to the nearby Fondi-Sperlonga train station, the local bus service is a convenient option; tickets can often be purchased at tobacco shops (Tabaccherie) or kiosks. Naturally, there is no metro or tram in this idyllic coastal town.Bicycles and e-scooters are excellent ways to explore the flatter sections and the promenade, and rental stations are easy to find. Taxis are also available, especially for trips to the train station or more secluded beaches, while ride-sharing services are less common here. Parking can be a challenge during high season, so parking on the outskirts of town and enjoying a short walk is often the most relaxed choice.
