    The trilobite beds at Mount Stephen are among the fossil sites of the Burgess Shale above Field. In the scree, over 500-million-year-old trilobites are abundant. The area is restricted and only accessible as part of a guided hike offered by Parks Canada and the Burgess Shale Geoscience Foundation in summer. The ascent is short but very steep – approximately 800 meters of elevation gain. Collecting fossils is prohibited.

    The Yoho National Park is located on the western side of the Canadian Rocky Mountains in British Columbia and borders Banff and Kootenay. It was founded in 1886 and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Rocky Mountain Parks. Among its most famous attractions are Emerald Lake, Takakkaw Falls, the Natural Bridge, and the railway's Spiral Tunnels at Kicking Horse Pass. The small village of Field on the Trans-Canada Highway is the starting point.

    The non-profit Burgess Shale Geoscience Foundation is based in Field. During summer, it organizes guided hikes to the Burgess Shale fossil sites – to the Walcott Quarry and the trilobite beds on Mount Stephen. Both tours are strenuous day hikes and and must be booked in advance; access without a guide is not permitted.

    History & Geology

    The Kicking Horse PassIn 1884, the Canadian Pacific Railway laid its tracks over the Kicking Horse Pass. The steep gradient caused frequent train derailments; thus, in 1909, the Spiral Tunnels were constructed, allowing trains to loop through the mountain. From the Trans-Canada Highway viewpoint, you can observe a long freight train crossing over itself.Burgess ShaleIn 1909, paleontologist Charles Walcott discovered marine animal fossils from the Cambrian period above Field, approximately 500 million years old and exceptionally well-preserved. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is only accessible via guided hikes.

    Getting There & Around

    The Trans-Canada Highway traverses the park; from Lake Louise to Field it's about 30 km. The road to Takakkaw Falls is only open in summer and has tight hairpin bends, which are unsuitable for long RVs and trailers. The access road to Lake O'Hara is closed to private vehicles; spots on the Parks Canada bus are allocated by lottery. For the park you need a Parks Canada Pass.
