    Culture

After the 1852 gold strike and Kauri timber trade, the town grew fast; today it's home to artists, potters, and mussel farmers. In the bays south of the town, green-lipped mussels and oysters are farmed, which you can buy at farm shops.

    Exploring locally

From Thames, State Highway 25 winds along the coast for about an hour's drive. Road 309 over the mountains to Whitianga is partly unpaved. Buses run infrequently, so a car is almost essential on the peninsula.
