    The main altar of the Romanesque Cathedral was consecrated in 1145, the crypt as early as 1123. Worth seeing are the crypt with figures believed to be Giant Finn and his wife, and the 15th-century astronomical clock, whose figures emerge with the chimes.

    The University Botanical Garden, east of the Old Town, is open daily 6 AM-8 PM, free entry. Around 7,000 plant species grow outdoors. The greenhouses, with nine climate zones, are being renovated and are set to reopen in 2027.

    Eating and Drinking in Lund

    Lund's cuisine is distinctly Scanian: down-to-earth, with ingredients from the surrounding farmland. Additionally, there's a student-driven café and pub culture.

    Äggakaka

    A thick oven pancake made from eggs, milk, and flour, served with fried bacon and lingonberries. A classic dish from Skåne.

    Spettekaka

    A tall, spit-roasted cake, made from eggs, sugar, and potato flour. This Skåne specialty is very light and crispy, and eaten broken into pieces.

    Goose Dinner

    Around St. Martin's Day on November 11th, goose is traditionally eaten in Skåne, preceded by black sour soup (svartsoppa). Many restaurants offer a goose menu in November.

    Fika

    The Swedish fika with a cinnamon bun or cake is part of daily life in Lund. In the Old Town, you’ll find numerous cafés and pastry shops, many with courtyard seating.

    Cathedral, University, Student Life

    Ecclesiastical Hub of the NorthIn the Middle Ages, Lund was the ecclesiastical centre of Scandinavia. In 1103/1104, the city became the seat of the first Nordic archbishopric, which initially encompassed all of Scandinavia, until Norway (1152) and Sweden (1164) received their own archbishoprics. The main altar of the Cathedral was consecrated in 1145, and the building is considered the most significant example of Romanesque architecture in the Nordic region. In its crypt stand figures interpreted as the giant Finn and his wife, around whom a well-known construction legend revolves. The astronomical clock Horologium mirabile Lundense dates from the 15th century, was extensively restored in 1923, and features mechanical figures during its chimes. With the Peace of Roskilde, Skåne became part of Sweden in 1658, and in 1666, the Crown founded the university, partly to bind the region to Sweden.Nations and CarnivalStudent life today is still organized within the traditional Nations, student associations with their own houses, pubs, and festivals. Every four years, the Lundakarnevalen transforms Lundagård Park into a large festival ground with a parade and shows. The open-air museum Kulturen, founded in 1882 by a cultural association, displays farmhouses, townhouses, and handicrafts from Southern Sweden right in the city centre. The Skissernas museum offers an unusual perspective on public art with its drafts and sketches for murals and sculptures.

    Getting there and around in Lund

    Lund is an important railway hub in Southern Sweden, located on the line from Malmö to Stockholm and Gothenburg.Train: From Lund C station, Öresundståg and Pågatåg trains run to Malmö in about 10 to 15 minutes, and continue via the Öresund Bridge to Copenhagen Airport (approx. 35 minutes) and Copenhagen. Long-distance trains connect Lund directly with Stockholm and Gothenburg.Tram: Since December 2020, the 5.5-kilometer line connects Lund C with the University Hospital, LTH, Brunnshög, and the ESS research facility.Bus: Skånetrafiken operates city and regional buses. Tickets can be purchased in the Skånetrafiken app or at ticket machines, not from the driver.On Foot and By Bike: The Old Town is compact and easy to explore on foot; Lund also has a dense network of cycle paths.

    Malmö has a good 360,000 inhabitants, making it Sweden's third-largest city, and lies on the Öresund, about 40 minutes by train from Copenhagen. The old town around Stortorget and Lilla Torg, the Renaissance castle Malmöhus and the Turning Torso residential tower in the Västra Hamnen harbour district show the range of the city. More than a third of residents were born abroad, which is clearly noticeable in its markets, snack bars and restaurants.

On Möllevångstorget, laid out from 1904 to 1906 and featuring Axel Ebbe's 'Arbetets ära' worker statue, fruit and vegetables are sold daily, surrounded by vegetable shops, falafel eateries, bars, and small restaurants. By night, the district is one of the city's liveliest; on its northern edge lies Folkets Park, considered the world's oldest public park created by a popular movement.
