Palma de Mallorca

The construction of La Seu Cathedral began in 1229, shortly after the Christian conquest of Mallorca, and was completed in 1601. Its rose window measures almost 14 meters in diameter and is, after Strasbourg, the second-largest preserved Gothic one. From 1903, Antoni Gaudí redesigned the presbytery with a large baldachin, and from 2001 to 2006, Miquel Barceló clad the Sant Pere Chapel with ceramics.

Jakob II. von Mallorca had the castle built at the beginning of the 14th century on a wooded hill about three kilometers west of the center. It is one of the few castles in Europe with a circular layout. Today it houses the City History Museum, and from the top, you can look out over the city and bay.

The 11th-century bathhouse is one of the few structures remaining from the Moorish city of Madina Mayurqa. Two rooms can be seen, and some columns still date back to Roman times. The complex is located in a garden in the Old Town, just a few minutes from the Cathedral.

The palace opposite the cathedral was a Moorish fortress. King James II of Majorca had it rebuilt as a royal residence from 1305. Today, it is an official residence of the Spanish royal family; state ceremonies occur upstairs.

The Gothic stock exchange building was constructed between 1426 and 1452 following plans by Guillem Sagrera, serving as the seat of the merchant guild. Inside, six twisted columns, devoid of capitals, support the vault of the four equally high naves, reminiscent of palm trunks. The building is located near the port in the La Llotja quarter.
