    Hermanus, situated on Walker Bay about an hour and a half's drive southeast of Cape Town, is renowned as one of the world's best spots for land-based whale watching. From around June to November, Southern Right Whales arrive in the bay for mating and calving, often just a few dozen meters from the cliffs.

    Fisher village to whale-watch site

    Hermanus originated in the 19th century as a fishing village and was originally called Hermanuspietersfontein, after a teacher and shepherd who found a spring here. The town long relied on fishing and whaling, but today thrives on tourism and the whales, which have returned in large numbers since the hunting ban. The town boasts many galleries and handicraft shops.

    Traveling in Hermanus

    The town center and the Cliff Path are easily explored on foot. There's hardly any public transport, so for the surrounding wineries and beaches, you'll need a car or Uber. The drive from Cape Town is via the N2 or the scenic coastal road R44 through Gordon's Bay and Betty's Bay – the longer but more beautiful route.

    Paarl is the largest town in the Cape Winelands, about 60 kilometers northeast of Cape Town. Above it rise the smooth granite domes of Paarl Mountain, from which the town gets its name: After rain, they glisten like pearls. All around are large wineries such as Fairview and KWV.
