    The 1976 UprisingOn June 16, 1976, thousands of students protested against Afrikaans as a compulsory school language. Police shot into the crowd; the photo of a dying twelve-year-old Hector Pieterson went global. Today, June 16 is a national holiday, Youth Day. The Hector Pieterson Museum documents these events with photos and eyewitness accounts.Soweto TodayBeyond its history, Soweto has its own music and fashion scene, where Kwaito and many Amapiano productions originated. On weekends, Shisa Nyamas – grill restaurants cooking meat directly over fire – are packed. The FNB Stadium, host of the 2010 World Cup Final, is on the district's edge.

    From Sandton or Rosebank, an Uber or Bolt will take you around 30 to 45 minutes. Many visitors book a half-day tour with hotel pickup, often with local guides from Soweto. Around Vilakazi Street, you can easily get around on foot during the day; for more distant spots like Kliptown or Regina Mundi, you'll need a vehicle.
