Maastricht is the capital of the province of Limburg and is located in the very southeast of the Netherlands on both banks of the Meuse, bordered by Belgium to the west and south. The centrepiece of the old town is the Vrijthof, a square where the Sint-Servaasbasiliek, the Sint-Janskerk, and the Spaans Gouvernement are located. Of the first stone city wall, built from 1229, the Helpoort, among other parts, remains. South of the centre rises the Sint Pietersberg, with a fort from 1701/1702 and a network of underground quarries. The university, founded in 1976, attracts many international students. The city gained international renown through the Treaty of Maastricht, signed on 7 February 1992 in the Gouvernement, the seat of the provincial government.
