    The lighthouse stands at the mouth of the Umzimkulu and is the city's landmark. From here, you have a wide view over the coast and river mouth.

    2Umtentweni Beach

    Wide sandy beach a few kilometers north of the city, good for long walks. Only swim where lifeguards are on duty.

    3Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve

    Around 35 kilometers northwest of the city, the Mzimkulwana has carved a deep, forested gorge. You can hike, drive to viewpoints, or brave the Wild Swing over the edge.

    Culture & History

    The city is named after Theophilus Shepstone, a British colonial official in Natal. Its development was closely linked to sugarcane and coastal trade. Today, Zulu culture, along with Indian and European influences, shapes the region.

    Exploring

    From Durban, you can reach Port Shepstone via the N2 in about an hour and a half. Locally, minibus taxis are the main transport, but for visitors, a rental car is much more practical. For the Oribi Gorge and the surrounding beaches, you'll need a car.

    The Wild Coast is a roughly 250 km stretch of Eastern Cape coastline from East London to the KwaZulu-Natal border. Green hills dotted with Xhosa rondavels reach cliffs, secluded bays, and river mouths. Most famous is the rock arch Hole in the Wall near Coffee Bay.
