    1Moses Mabhida Stadium

    The 2010 FIFA World Cup stadium, with its distinctive arch, is the city's landmark. A cabin travels up the arch; from the top, you gaze across the beach, harbour, and city. Those who wish can climb the arch via stairs.

    2Durban Botanic Gardens

    The garden, established in 1849, is considered Africa's oldest existing botanical garden. Highlights include its cycads (some rare species), the orchid house, and the bird-filled lake. On weekends, many families picnic here.

    Zulu, Britons and Indians

    Durban was founded 1824 as a British trading post on Zulu King Shaka's land, initially Port Natal. From 1860, British brought Indian indentured workers for sugarcane; traders followed later. Their descendants shape the city today. Mahatma Gandhi arrived in Natal in 1893 as a young lawyer, developing his idea of non-violent resistance. Zulu culture is omnipresent in music, crafts and language.

    Discovering Durban

    King Shaka Airport is about 35 kilometres north of the city. Explore the Golden Mile promenade on foot or by rental bike. For all other journeys, take Uber or Bolt, especially in the evenings. A rental car is useful if you're travelling further north or into the Drakensberge.
