    Cradle of Rhino Protection

Operation RhinoIn the early 20th century, only dozens of white rhinos remained in the iMfolozi area, the last of their kind in Southern Africa. In the 1960s, park management began catching and relocating animals to other protected areas. A large portion of Africa's white rhino population today descends from this group.Landscape and WildlifeThe park spans about 960 square kilometers of hilly savanna, river valleys, and forest. Besides rhinos, elephants, lions, leopards, buffalo, giraffes, and wild dogs live here. The southern iMfolozi area includes a roadless wilderness, accessible only on guided walks.

    Arrival and Orientation

The park is located approximately 280 kilometers north of Durban; the drive via the N2 takes about three hours. The main entrance for the northern Hluhluwe section is the Memorial Gate. The roads are mostly paved, so you can go on a self-drive safari. You can stay overnight in the state-run camps within the park or in lodges around the town of Hluhluwe. From St. Lucia, the park can be reached in about an hour.
