Mont-Aux-Sources
Mont-Aux-Sources, literally the 'Mountain of Springs', is a striking peak in South Africa's northern Drakensberg and a hydrologically significant site. Several important rivers of the country originate here, including the Tugela, the Orange River, and the Elands River, underscoring its central role in the ecosystem. You'll find it within the Royal Natal National Park, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park. Visitors can expect a dramatic mountain landscape here, dominated by the imposing Amphitheatre, a rock face approximately five kilometers long. From its edge, the Tugela Falls, one of the world's highest waterfalls, plunges into the depths. The ascent to the Mont-Aux-Sources plateau is a challenging hike, often involving the famous chain ladders, rewarding you with spectacular panoramic views. Our Tip: Plan your visit in the months after the summer rains (approximately March to May) to experience the waterfalls in their full glory. Start your hike early in the morning to avoid the largest crowds and take advantage of cooler temperatures. Sturdy footwear and sufficient water are essential.
