The modern city finds its home in western Taichung. At its heart lies Toyo Ito's National Theater, a structure of sweeping concrete shells, through which you can stroll around, even without a ticket.Further north lies the Fengjia Night Market, one of the country's largest, and on the city's outskirts is Tunghai University with I. M. Pei's tent-like Luce Memorial Chapel.
Xitun is sprawling, with sights several kilometers apart. Plan your afternoon for the theater and chapel, and your evening for Fengjia Night Market. For distances, bus or taxi are best. On weekends, the night market is extremely crowded; it's more relaxed weekdays.
