Arcachon, originally a small fishing village in the 19th century, evolved into a thriving seaside resort with the 1857 railway arrival and the Pereire brothers' efforts. It quickly became a popular winter health resort, particularly for lung patients, and a sophisticated summer retreat. The town is divided into four «Villes» – Ville d'Été, Ville d'Automne, Ville de Printemps, and the striking Ville d'Hiver – reflecting the development of different eras. The Ville d'Hiver is distinguished by its unique eclectic architecture, built between 1860 and 1890. Here, approximately 300 splendid villas showcase diverse styles, from Neo-Gothic and Moorish-inspired to Swiss chalet motifs, often adorned with artistic turrets, balconies, and elaborate embellishments.Although the famous Casino Mauresque was destroyed by fire in 1977, the surviving villas and thoughtful urban planning define Arcachon's cultural heritage. A central local tradition is oyster farming in the Bassin d'Arcachon, which not only shapes the economy but is also deeply rooted in regional identity, evident in numerous tasting venues.
