    Culture, Art, and History in Mimizan

    Mimizan is located between the Atlantic and the pine forests of Landes. A priory was founded here in the Middle Ages, and the place was a stop on the coastal route for pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela.The bell tower with its portal, the Clocher-Porche of the former priory, dates from this period, and since 1998, it has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage as part of the Way of St. James. In the early 20th century, Mimizan-Plage developed into a seaside resort. Among its famous guests was the British Duke of Westminster, who had a hunting lodge built by the lake.The local culture is linked to the sea and forestry; until the 20th century, the area also thrived on resin extraction. Mimizan-Plage is now a holiday resort, while Mimizan-Bourg preserves the historical core.

    In Mimizan, the best way to get around is by bike, thanks to the extensive network of cycle paths connecting the town and the coast. For further exploration of the surrounding Les Landes region, a rental car is recommended for flexibility and to reach secluded beaches or pine forests. Within the manageable town center and to the beaches, most destinations are also easily accessible on foot.
