    RV Tips for Netherlands

The Netherlands is a straightforward RV destination: distances are short, roads flat and well-maintained. Restrictions mainly concern overnight stays outside official sites and in city centers.Pitches and Overnight StaysNo Wild Camping: Wild camping is not permitted in the Netherlands and can incur fines. Where overnight stays in vehicles are tolerated, local municipalities regulate this in their ordinances – anyone setting up an awning, table, or grill is considered camping and thereby violates the rules.Camperplaatsen and Campsites: Stay overnight at designated RV pitches (camperplaatsen) or campsites.Natuurkampeerterreinen: These recognized nature campsites are located away from the hustle and bustle, for example in forests, orchards, on estates, or by the sea. Check with the respective site whether RVs are permitted.Driving and Traffic RulesSpeed Limits: For RVs up to 3.5 tons, car speed limits apply: on motorways between 6 AM and 7 PM 100 km/h, otherwise up to 130 km/h depending on signage, on expressways 100 km/h, and on other roads outside urban areas 80 km/h. For heavier vehicles, inquire about the limits applicable to your registration before your trip.Tolls: There is no general toll. The Westerscheldetunnel in Zeeland has been free for cars, RVs, and motorcycles since the end of 2024. A fee is still charged at the Kiltunnel near Dordrecht; it is higher for vehicles over 2.30 meters in height.Environmental Zones: Some cities have established environmental zones (milieuzones) for older diesel vehicles; petrol vehicles are always allowed to enter. Whether your vehicle is affected depends on its emission class – check this before your journey on milieuzones.nl.Visiting CitiesParking in city centers is expensive and scarce. For Amsterdam, Utrecht, Rotterdam, and The Hague, it's best to leave your RV at a campsite or pitch outside the city and travel into the center by train, tram, or bicycle.
