The Matte Quarter is by the Aare, directly below the Münsterplattform. Formerly, craftsmen, raftsmen, and boatmen lived here; today, small restaurants and homes define this quiet riverside quarter. The Mattelift connects the quarter to the Münsterplattform in the Upper Town.
The Matte is located right on the Aare, below the Münsterplattform. In the past, artisans, raftsmen, and boatmen lived here; water power drove mills and saws. The Mattenenglisch, a secret language of the district's residents, also originates from this time. Today, the Matte is a quiet residential area with low-rise houses, small eateries, and the rushing sound of the Schwellenwehr – a good place to escape the Old Town above for a while.
