    1Vadstena Klosterkyrka

    The Gothic abbey church of the Bridgettine Order, named Blåkyrkan for its bluish-shimmering limestone, was begun in the late 14th century and consecrated in 1430. Instead of a tower, it features only a roof turret. The Birgitta Shrine houses relics of Saint Birgitta; inside, you will find medieval sculptures and tombs.

    2Vadstena Slott

    Gustav Vasa had the castle built as a fortress on Lake Vättern from 1545; his son, Duke Magnus, transformed it into a Renaissance residence from 1555. It is considered one of Sweden's best-preserved Renaissance castles and is surrounded by ramparts and a moat. Since 1899, the Regional Archives have been housed in the eastern half, while the western half displays royal interiors from the 16th and 17th centuries; in summer, the Vadstena Academy performs opera in the Wedding Hall.

    3Birgittenkloster (Birgittasystrarnas Kloster Pax Mariæ)

    Surrounding the abbey church are the historic monastery grounds, with remains of the medieval Brigittine monastery, which closed in 1595. South of it, on Lake Vättern's shore, Brigittine nuns have been living there again since 1935; their monastery Pax Mariæ, established in 1963, continues the order's tradition.

    4Vadstena Spetsmuseum (Spitzenmuseum)

    The small museum showcases Vadstena Lace and explains its patterns and techniques. Lace has been made in the town since the 17th century: from 1637, residents of the soldiers' home in the former monastery earned extra income this way, establishing Vadstena Lace's reputation.

    Vadstena: Castle, Monastery, and Rådhustorget

    The tour takes you from the Renaissance castle on Vättern, via Rådhustorget with Sweden's oldest preserved town hall, to the Abbey Church with the shrine of Saint Birgitta.     The history of Vadstena is closely linked to **Saint Birgitta**. In 1346, King Magnus Eriksson and Queen Blanka bequeathed their royal court in Vadstena to a new monastery, which became the mother convent of the Bridgettine Order, consecrated in 1384. The convent church was consecrated in 1430, and Birgitta's relics are preserved in the Birgitta reliquary. In the Late Middle Ages, the convent was a significant spiritual center and remains a pilgrimage destination to this day; it was closed in 1595 after the Reformation, but Bridgettine nuns have lived in Vadstena again since 1935.**Vadstena Castle** was started by Gustav Vasa in 1545 as a fortress; his son Duke Magnus had it expanded into a Renaissance residence from 1555. Since 1899, it has housed the Regional Archives. In summer, the **Vadstena Academy** stages operas, often rediscovered or newly composed works, including in the castle's wedding hall.
