    1Mariestad Domkyrka (Kathedrale)

    The Mariestads domkyrka was built between 1593 and 1619 commissioned by Duke Karl, later King Karl IX.; its tower can be seen from afar above the city. In the early 17th century, Mariestad was the seat of a Superintendentur, similar to a diocese. A bishop no longer resides here today, but the church has retained the title of Cathedral.

    Gamla Stan, Mariestad's Old Town surrounding the Cathedral, is characterized by wooden houses and cobblestones. In its northernmost part, Näset, elements from before the Great City Fire of 1693 are preserved. Many houses bear signs detailing their history; however, the courtyards are private property.

    Mariestad's cultural legacy

    Founded by Duke KarlMariestad was founded in 1583 by Duke Karl, who later became King Karl IX. He named the city and its church after his first wife, Maria of the Palatinate.A Cathedral Church Without a BishopThe Mariestad Cathedral Church was built between 1593 and 1619, with its nave already in use by 1602. In the early 17th century, Mariestad was the seat of a superintendency for several decades, which functioned similarly to a diocese.     Sjötorp, on Lake Vänern's shore, is the Göta Canal's western end, stretching 190 km to Mem on the Baltic Sea with 58 locks. Many canal journeys begin or end here, and visitors come to watch the boats pass through the locks and take a break in the harbour. The first lock by the lake is popularly known as Sjöslussen. The canal season for boats is limited to summer. In 2026, the high season ran from June 16th to August 12th; find current times at gotakanal.se.

At Sjötorp on the eastern shore, the Göta Canal begins, spanning over 190 km and 58 locks to Mem on the Baltic Sea; in the southwest, the Göta älv flows from Vänersborg, en route to Trollhättan. Towns like Mariestad, Åmål, and Läckö Castle invite stops; in summer, archipelagos, boat trips, and water sports offer great variety.

    Läckö is located on Kållandsö, the second largest island in Vänern, north of Lidköping. Here stands Läckö slott, one of Sweden's best-preserved Baroque castles. Its origins date back to 1298, when Bishop Brynolf Algotsson of Skara founded a fortified castle here. The castle received its current appearance in the 17th century under Count Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie. Opposite lies Naturum Vänerskärgården in Victoriahuset, a few steps further is the fishing harbour Spiken.

    Vadstena is a small town on the eastern shore of Lake Vättern. Here, in the 14th century, Saint Birgitta founded the mother convent of her order, and Gustav Vasa had a castle built on the lakeside, which later became a royal residence. The abbey church, castle, and medieval buildings are all clustered together in the old town.

    Motala is situated on the northeastern shore of Lake Vättern, where the Göta Canal exits the lake. The town, home to just over 30,000 inhabitants, grew around the construction of the canal and the Motala Verkstad engineering works. Today, visitors come for the locks, the technical history museums, and the long sandy beach of Varamobaden.
