Waterfalls and CanalTrollhättan is inextricably linked to the waterfalls of the Göta älv, which shaped its development over centuries. Attempts to bypass the rapids with locks began as early as the 18th century, and the first Trollhätte Canal was opened in 1800.Hydropower and IndustryThe use of hydropower made Trollhättan an industrial hub. The Olidan power plant and the historic lock systems are now technical monuments. When the dam gates are opened during a Fallpåsläpp, approximately 300,000 liters of water per second plunge down.FilmWith the film production company Film i Väst, Trollhättan has developed into a center for Scandinavian film production, earning it the nickname "Trollywood".

Vänersborg is situated at the southwestern tip of Lake Vänern, where the Göta älv begins its journey to the West Coast. The nickname "Lilla Paris" was given to the town at the end of the 19th century by the poet Birger Sjöberg, who was born here. Today, the small town combines administrative history, an unusual museum, and lakeside paths.

Vänersborg's Cultural Heritage and History
Foundation and County SeatVänersborg was granted its town privileges in 1644, and the inhabitants of the older Brätte moved here, erecting their first wooden church in the 1640s. In 1680, the town became the county seat of Älvsborgs län, and since 1998, it has formally served as the regional capital of Västra Götaland.Reconstruction After 1834Following the town fire of 1834, Vänersborg was rebuilt as a county seat and seafaring town with new houses along Drottninggatan and Kungagatan, such as the pharmacy building from 1839. The current Vänersborgs kyrka was completed in 1784, and its tower in 1801.Birger Sjöberg and the MuseumCulturally, Vänersborg is closely linked to the poet Birger Sjöberg, who gained fame with "Fridas bok." The Vänersborgs Museum from 1885 boasts Sweden's oldest preserved, purpose-built museum interior.
Läckö is located on Kållandsö, the second largest island in Vänern, north of Lidköping. Here stands Läckö slott, one of Sweden's best-preserved Baroque castles. Its origins date back to 1298, when Bishop Brynolf Algotsson of Skara founded a fortified castle here. The castle received its current appearance in the 17th century under Count Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie. Opposite lies Naturum Vänerskärgården in Victoriahuset, a few steps further is the fishing harbour Spiken.

Mariestad's cultural legacy
Founded by Duke KarlMariestad was founded in 1583 by Duke Karl, who later became King Karl IX. He named the city and its church after his first wife, Maria of the Palatinate.A Cathedral Church Without a BishopThe Mariestad Cathedral Church was built between 1593 and 1619, with its nave already in use by 1602. In the early 17th century, Mariestad was the seat of a superintendency for several decades, which functioned similarly to a diocese. Today, there is no longer a bishop, but the church's name and title have remained.Old Town and MuseumThe wooden buildings of Gamla Stan have been preserved to this day, including parts in Näset dating from before the city fire of 1693. Many houses bear signs detailing their history, but please note that the courtyards are private property. The Vadsbo Museum tells the story of the city and the region.

Åmål is a small town in Dalsland on the western shore of Lake Vänern. Gamla Staden survived the great town fire of 1901, and its wooden houses from the 18th and 19th centuries still shape its character today. At the guest harbor are the local heritage museum, tourist office, and old church.

The Fire of 1901The great city fire of 1901 devastated almost all of Åmål. The Gamla Staden, east of the river and north of Kungsberget, remained preserved, with its 18th and 19th-century wooden houses retaining the character of the old town. The rest of the city center was rebuilt after the fire.Music and FilmCulturally, Åmål is best known for its annual Åmåls Bluesfest. Although Lukas Moodysson's film "Fucking Åmål" bears the town's name, it was not filmed here. Scenes from Ronja Räubertochter, however, were shot on the nearby Sörknatten mountain.PersonalitiesHistorian Anders Fryxell was born in the vicinity, at the rectory of Edsleskog. The artist and illustrator Peter Bergting hails from Åmål.
