Canggu, northwest of Seminyak, has grown from a surf village into a hub for surfers, café-goers, and digital nomads. Black sand beaches with consistent waves alternate with rice paddies and densely developed streets.
Canggu stretches along the west coast between Berawa in the south and Pererenan in the north, comprising several villages. Its main artery is Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong, lined with cafés, coworking spaces, and boutiques, leading to the beach of the same name. Rice fields still lie between the new constructions but are rapidly diminishing. The streets are narrow and crowded with scooters; especially the shortcut between Batu Bolong and Berawa gets blocked during rush hours. It’s 15 to 30 minutes to Seminyak, and a good half hour to Tanah Lot.
Berawa in the south is most built-up; surf schools and bars cluster around Batu Bolong, while Echo Beach and Pererenan to the north are quieter.

    Culture and Character

Surf Village in TransitionCanggu was long a farming village with rice fields reaching to the beach, known only among surfers for the waves off Echo Beach and Batu Bolong. Since the 2010s, it has become one of Bali's fastest-growing neighborhoods, shaped by long-term guests and digital nomads. Development, traffic, and water consumption are much-discussed topics in Bali.On Batu Bolong beach stands the eponymous temple, around which, during ceremonies, processions with offerings proceed to the sea. In the villages in the hinterland, the Banjar still have their community halls and temples.
