    The History

Power Centre in the Baltic SeaThe castle, built in the 13th century (presumably by the Archbishop of Lund), was for centuries contested by the Church, the Danish Crown, and the Hanseatic League, which briefly governed Bornholm. In 1658, the island briefly became Swedish; after a local uprising, it reverted to Denmark. In the 18th century, the castle was abandoned, its stones repurposed for other buildings on the island. Only in the 19th century was the ruin protected and later partially secured.

    Exploring locally

Hammershus is about three kilometers southwest of Allinge. If driving, park at the visitor center; the large car park is paid from Easter until the autumn holidays. Buses from Rønne and Allinge stop nearby. The most beautiful approach is on foot, via coastal paths from Sandvig or Vang. On Hammeren peninsula, paths are sometimes steep and stony; sturdy shoes are recommended.

The chalk cliffs of the steep coast are approximately 70 million years old; Caspar David Friedrich painted them in 1818.Its most famous point is the 118-meter-high Königsstuhl, home to the National Park Centre, where a skywalk has extended over the edge since 2023. A panoramic trail runs for about eleven to twelve kilometers along the high cliff coast from Sassnitz to Lohme, or you can take a shuttle bus from the Hagen car park.
