Chamonix-Mont-Blanc lies at the foot of Mont Blanc in Haute-Savoie and is regarded as the cradle of alpinism. The town is an international centre for mountaineers, hikers and winter sports enthusiasts. The cable car up the Aiguille du Midi (3,842 metres) takes you into the heart of the Mont Blanc massif, and the rack railway to Montenvers takes you to the Mer de Glace, the largest glacier in France, with its ice cave carved anew every year. In the town centre, Savoyard architecture, Belle Époque hotels, outfitters and restaurants mix. The Musée Alpin shows the history of the opening up of the Alps. It is busiest in July and August and during the winter holidays in February; June, September and early winter are quieter. It is best to book tickets for the Aiguille du Midi online well in advance, ideally for one of the first rides in the morning.

Av. Michel Croz
The Avenue Michel Croz is a central street in Chamonix. It is named after the valley's mountain guide, Michel Croz, who in 1865 was part of Edward Whymper's rope team during the first ascent of the Matterhorn and died on the descent. Along the street, you'll find mountain sports shops, boutiques, and cafés; it's lively in the evenings.Our Tip: Early in the morning it's quiet, and the light on the mountains is great for photos.

Culture, History & Alpine Tradition
The cultural identity of Chamonix-Mont-Blanc is closely tied to the history of alpinism. The 1741 visit of Englishmen William Windham and Richard Pococke made the valley known in Europe; the first ascent of Mont Blanc in 1786 by Jacques Balmat and Michel-Gabriel Paccard is considered the birth of mountaineering.Subsequently, Chamonix became a meeting point for alpinists and travelers. In 1924, the first Olympic Winter Games were held here. The architecture reflects this development: alongside traditional Savoyard wooden houses stand grand Belle Époque hotels from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.Mountain guiding plays a central role. The Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix, founded in 1821, is considered the oldest mountain guide association in the world. Every year in mid-August, it celebrates the Fête des Guides, a festival with a mass, parade, and demonstrations in the village.
Nightlife
After a day in the mountains, Chamonix offers a diverse selection of bars and venues. You'll find relaxed meeting points like the Barracuda Chamonix for an after-work beer or livelier options like the Choucas Le for later hours.
Out and About Locally
Chamonix centre is easily explored on foot. For longer distances in the valley, buses and the Saint-Gervais–Vallorcine railway (Mont-Blanc Express) are available, free between Les Houches and Vallorcine with your accommodation's Gästekarte (Carte d'hôte). Cable and rack railways (Aiguille du Midi, Montenvers, Brévent) take you to the high mountains and hiking trails.
