    Châlons-en-Champagne, prefecture of the Marne department, blends historical heritage with waterways. You'll discover the Cathédrale Saint-Étienne and the collegiate church Notre-Dame-en-Vaux, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site as a stop on the Way of St. James. The city is traversed by the Marne and the smaller rivers and canals Mau and Nau; on a boat trip, you'll see half-timbered houses and old bridges from the water. In summer, the light and sound show “Métamorph'eau'ses” runs evenings on the canals. Explore the old town, visit a champagne cellar, and relax in Grand Jard Park.     The private Musée de la Machine à Coudre on Place des Buttes was founded by Huguette and Lucien Cordier and is now run by their son. It displays over 500 historic sewing machines from the period between 1830 and 1900, along with approximately 500 children's sewing machines over a hundred years old. Many pieces are artfully decorated and tell how the sewing machine transformed the textile industry and the household. Important: Visits are only possible by telephone appointment.

Next to the church, the Musée du Cloître exhibits sculptures and column figures from the Romanesque cloister, demolished in the 18th century.     Le Petit Jard

    5Le Petit Jard

    The Petit Jard is a public park established in 1861 in the heart of Châlons-en-Champagne and holds the “Jardin remarquable” label. It stretches along both sides of the Nau Canal and is designed as an arboretum with numerous botanical specialities and flowerbeds. After storm damage, it was redeveloped in 2001. On its edge stands the Château du Marché, a former gatehouse and guardhouse by the water. The park is open daily year-round and free of charge, featuring a playground for young children. Our tip: Early in the morning, it's quietest here; from the bridges over the canal, you have beautiful views of the park.

    Around 25 kilometers west, the Côte des Blancs begins, the region of single-varietal Chardonnay Champagnes. They are considered particularly fine and age-worthy.

    Châlons-en-Champagne, the Roman Catalaunum, boasts a long history. In 451, the Battle of the Catalaunian Plains took place nearby, where a Roman-Visigothic army halted the advance of Attila and the Huns; its exact location remains disputed to this day. The city's medieval splendor is evident in its sacred buildings.Architecturally, the collegiate church of Notre-Dame-en-Vaux stands out, a UNESCO World Heritage site featuring Romanesque and Gothic elements, along with Saint-Étienne Cathedral, notable for its Neoclassical west facade and valuable stained-glass windows. Along the canals, half-timbered houses reflect the city's historical heritage. Culturally, Châlons is closely linked to Champagne, even if not situated directly within the vineyards; several Champagne houses are based here. Waterways and gardens like Petit Jard and Grand Jard define the cityscape.
