Baroque squares and around 18 kilometers of arcades characterize the center; in the 20th century, Turin became a car city as the seat of Fiat.

    Turin's landmark was begun in 1863 as a synagogue, taken over by the city in 1877 and, following plans by Alessandro Antonelli, completed in 1889 as a 167.5-meter-tall tower. Inside, the National Cinema Museum is housed; a glass elevator ascends to the observation platform at 85 meters.

    History and Culture

    The Romans founded a military camp here, later dedicated to Augustus; its orthogonal grid is still preserved in the Quadrilatero Romano today. In 1563, Duke Emanuele Filiberto made Turin the capital of Savoy. In the 17th and 18th centuries, architects like Guarino Guarini and Filippo Juvarra shaped the city. The Residences of the House of Savoy have been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997.Fiat was founded in Turin in 1899. Antonio Benedetto Carpano made vermouth an industrially produced product here in 1786, and Caffarel introduced the Gianduiotto in 1865. The National Film Museum is housed in the Mole Antonelliana. In 2006, Turin hosted the Olympic Winter Games.

    Out and about locally

    The center is easily explored on foot; the arcades offer shelter from rain. The first metro line, opened 2006, connects Porta Susa and Porta Nuova stations with Lingotto, among others.High-speed trains travel to Milan in about 50 minutes. Turin-Caselle Airport lies about 15 kilometers north. The cog railway to Superga leaves from Sassi.
