    The Canopy Walkways (Jambatan Kanopi) of Taman Negara traverse the rainforest on suspension bridges connecting platforms in the treetops. There are two walkways near Kuala Tahan: the approximately 530-meter long path at the foot of Bukit Teresek, opened in 1992, and the approximately 700-meter long path near Seberang Ara, which, according to the Mutiara Taman Negara Resort, officially opened on June 22, 2026.The old path at Bukit Teresek was closed in 2024 due to safety concerns; in May 2025, lightning struck its main support tree. A reopening date was not known in October 2025; please inquire locally for the current status.

    Taman Negara is Malaysia's most famous national park. Its canopy walkways near Kuala Tahan lead on narrow suspension bridges through the upper canopy of the rainforest: the approximately 700-meter-long path at Seberang Ara has been open since June 2026, while the approximately 530-meter-long path at Bukit Teresek has been closed since 2024. You purchase the entrance and camera permit at the park headquarters. It's cooler early in the morning; the paths remain closed in bad weather and on Fridays.

    Lubuk Simpon is the most easily accessible swimming spot in Taman Negara, a deep section of the river around 20 minutes' walk from the park headquarters. After a hike, you can cool off here in the clear water.

    The History of Treetop Paths

    Taman Negara's first Canopy Walkway was built in 1992 at the foot of Bukit Teresek. The roughly 530-meter-long path of suspended sections runs up to about 40 meters above the ground and was long promoted as the world's longest canopy walkway. In 2024, it was closed as no longer safe. A second, longer path near Seberang Ara was finished in July 2024, but was damaged by a tree falling onto a platform and only officially opened in June 2026.

    How to get there

    Both trails are near Kuala Tahan. From the village, take a small ferry to the park headquarters to first buy your entrance and camera permits. The Seberang Ara trail is accessed from Mutiara Taman Negara Resort; ask there or at the park counter for directions and tickets.

    The Bukit Teresek is a 334-meter-high hill behind the park headquarters in Kuala Tahan and the classic first hiking destination in Taman Negara. The trail starts flat in the rainforest, then becomes steeper and mostly leads over wooden boardwalks, partly over roots and rope sections, up to viewpoints with views over the park.
