    The Batek

The Batek are part of the Orang Asli, the indigenous peoples of the Malay Peninsula. Traditionally, they live by gathering, hunting, and trading forest products; some of their camps lie within and on the edge of Taman Negara. Park legislation grants them usage rights within the park. Tourism is an income source for some families, among others.

    How to get there

Visits are offered by operators in Kuala Tahan as guided boat excursions, often as part of a day program. Operators pay the community a fee per visitor; ask upon booking how the Batek are involved.

There are two walkways near Kuala Tahan: the approximately 530-meter long path at the foot of Bukit Teresek, opened in 1992, and the approximately 700-meter long path near Seberang Ara, which, according to the Mutiara Taman Negara Resort, officially opened on June 22, 2026.The old path at Bukit Teresek was closed in 2024 due to safety concerns; in May 2025, lightning struck its main support tree. A reopening date was not known in October 2025; please inquire locally for the current status.
