    History and Culture

    From Fishing Village to Holiday ResortBefore the arrival of the Spanish, the Pericú lived at the southern tip of the peninsula. The sheltered bay later served as an anchorage for seafarers, including privateers who lay in wait for the Manila galleons.     Exploring locally

    The Town Center, Marina, and El Médano Beach are close to each other and easily accessible on foot. Water taxis and glass-bottom boats run to El Arco and Playa del Amor from the Marina and the beach.Buses connect Cabo San Lucas with San José del Cabo via the Tourist Corridor; payment is cash only. Taxis are expensive, so agree on the price beforehand. The international airport is located near San José del Cabo, about a 45-minute drive away. For beaches along the corridor and excursions, a rental car is practical.

    San José del Cabo is the administrative seat of the municipality of Los Cabos on the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula, located approximately 32 km northeast of Cabo San Lucas. You come for the quiet historic center around Plaza Mijares, with its mission church, low colonial buildings, and gallery district, where the Art Walk takes place on Thursday evenings from November to June. On the outskirts of town is the Estero San José, a lagoon at the mouth of the Río San José.

The city center, with its cathedral and approx. 5 km long Malecón, is easily explored on foot.

    Located on the Gulf Coast of Baja California Sur, Loreto was founded in 1697 as the peninsula's first permanent Spanish settlement. The Mission Church and Mission Museum form the heart of its small downtown. Off the coast is the Bahía de Loreto National Park, home to five larger islands.
