History and Culture
Mission and SugarcaneIn 1723, the Jesuit Jaime Bravo founded the Mission Santa Rosa de las Palmas here, which received the name Nuestra Señora del Pilar a year later. Following the secularization of the missions, Todos Santos became the center of sugarcane cultivation on the peninsula in the 19th century; by the end of the century, there were eight sugar mills. Many of the brick buildings in the center date from this period. Local Adventures
The center is small and easily explored on foot. Partially unpaved tracks lead to the beaches outside, requiring a rental car or taxi.Todos Santos is located on Carretera Federal 19 between La Paz and Cabo San Lucas; long-distance buses stop in town. The nearest airports are La Paz and Los Cabos. Try to avoid driving cross-country at night.
