Vimmerby

Astrid Lindgren's HomelandAstrid Lindgren was born on November 14, 1907, at Näs parsonage on the outskirts of Vimmerby, and grew up there. The landscapes, farms, and people of her childhood appear in many of her books, from Michel aus Lönneberga to The Children of Bullerby. Her father grew up on the middle of the three farms in Sevedstorp, the inspiration for Bullerby. Astrid Lindgrens Värld first opened in 1981 as the fairytale village Sagobyn, and today showcases the worlds of her characters in settings, with theatre performances throughout the day. At Näs, you can visit her childhood home and learn more about her life. Although she spent most of her life in Stockholm, Lindgren is buried in the family grave at Vimmerby cemetery.Small Town and Brewing TraditionVimmerby is an old market and trading town for the surrounding region. The town is home to the traditional Åbro brewery, whose beer and sodas you can find in many local establishments. On the author's 100th birthday in 2007, a bronze statue was unveiled in Stora Torget.

Train: Vimmerby has a train station at the edge of the centre. Astrid Lindgren's World has its own stop during opening hours, about 100 m from the entrance; book tickets via SJ.Car: Near Vimmerby, roads 23 (from Malmö), 34 (from Linköping) and 40 (from Gothenburg) meet. From Gothenburg, you need around 3 hours; from Stockholm, about 3 hours 20 minutes. For the theme park, it's best to follow the signs, as navigation devices don't always show the new access road correctly.Locally: The town centre and Astrid Lindgren's World can be reached on foot or by bike. For Katthult, Sevedstorp and Norra Kvill National Park, you'll need a car, as buses only run there infrequently.
