    Tossa de Mar is a seaside resort on the southern Costa Brava, dominated by Vila Vella: a walled old town on a rocky promontory above the beach. The town walls with their round towers date back to the 12th century and are the only largely preserved fortified old town on the Catalan coast.

    Artists' Colony and FilmIn the 1930s, numerous painters lived and worked in Tossa, including André Masson. Marc Chagall spent a summer here. Art critic Rafael Benet therefore called the place "Babel de les Arts". The Museu Municipal, founded in 1935 in Vila Vella, exhibits works from this period, including Chagall's painting "The Heavenly Violinist", as well as finds from the Roman villa dels Ametllers.In 1951, the Hollywood film "Pandora and the Flying Dutchman" starring Ava Gardner was made here. A bronze statue of the actress stands in Vila Vella.

    Local discoveries

    Tossa has no train station. Sarfa buses connect the town with Lloret de Mar, Girona, and Barcelona. The winding coastal road GI-682 to Sant Feliu de Guíxols offers many viewpoints over the cliffs. Within the town itself, everything is reachable on foot, but parking in the centre is scarce and chargeable in summer.By Boat: During high season, regular boat services run to Lloret and Blanes.On Foot: Coastal paths lead to neighbouring coves.

Girona Cathedral dominates the city skyline; its approximately 23-meter-wide nave is considered the widest Gothic nave in the world. Explore the historic Jewish Quarter, El Call, with its winding alleys, and stroll along the city walls, whose towers offer panoramic views over the city. Also worth visiting are the Banys Àrabs, Romanesque baths from the late 12th or early 13th century, despite their name. For a relaxed experience, consider visiting in spring or autumn to explore the city in peace.

    Begur, on a hill in Baix Empordà, is under two kilometres from the sea. The castle ruin overlooks the village, where its lanes display the villas of Indianos, wealthy 19th-century returnees from Cuba. Begur boasts some of the Costa Brava's most famous coves.

    Figueres, capital of Alt Empordà, is the birthplace of Salvador Dalí. Its Theater-Museum makes the city the best-known destination in the Costa Brava hinterland, also featuring one of Europe's largest fortresses and a lively Rambla.
