    Langebaan is a holiday resort on Langebaan Lagoon, about an hour and a half's drive north of Cape Town. The turquoise, shallow, and sheltered waters of the lagoon and the strong winds make the place one of the country's most popular kitesurfing spots. Immediately to the south lies the West Coast National Park.

    Fossils and Fishing

    The area around Langebaan is one of the world's richest fossil sites: Phosphate mining at Langebaanweg unearthed bones of bears, saber-toothed cats, and short-necked giraffes. The lagoon also yielded approximately 117,000-year-old human footprints, known as Eva's Footprints. For a long time, the town relied on fishing; today, it thrives on tourism.

    Traveling

    From Cape Town, drive via the R27 along the coast. In town, get around on foot or by bike. For the National Park, Fossil Park, and Paternoster, you'll need a car.

    Robben Island is located approximately twelve kilometers off Cape Town in Table Bay. For over three centuries, the island served as a place of banishment, a leper colony, and a prison; during apartheid, Nelson Mandela and many other political prisoners were incarcerated here. Since 1999, Robben Island has been a UNESCO World Heritage site and a museum.
