Eupen, close to the German border about 15 kilometers south of Aachen, is the capital of the German-speaking Community of Belgium. Here you speak German, experience baroque townhouses from the time of the clothmakers, and are just minutes away from the edge of the High Fens. The city is divided into the Upper Town with its Market Square and St. Nikolaus, and the Lower Town along the Weser. Just outside the city gates are the Wesertalsperre and Hertogenwald, popular destinations for hiking and cycling.
Eupen has approximately 20,000 inhabitants and is the seat of the Parliament, Government, and Ministry of the German-speaking Community. Until 1920, the city belonged to Prussia; after the Treaty of Versailles, it became part of Belgium. You can explore the Upper Town with its market square, town hall, and church on foot. The Lower Town on the Weser was the old industrial district and was severely affected by the 2021 floods. Particularly special are the German-speaking everyday life and its proximity to the High Fens-Eifel Nature Park.
