Sandstone WildernessThe Cederberg Mountains are named after the Clanwilliam cedar, a rare cypress species that grows only here and is now critically endangered. The wilderness area covers approximately 710 square kilometers of sandstone landscape with rock arches, towers, and overhangs. In many of these, the San, the original inhabitants, left behind paintings centuries to millennia ago.Rooibos and ClanwilliamOn the fringes of the mountains, around Clanwilliam, Rooibos is cultivated, a shrub that commercially grows only in this region worldwide. In spring, approximately from August to September, wildflowers bloom in the surroundings. The region is also a destination for climbers and stargazers, because the sky is hardly disturbed by light pollution.
