Bandung is the capital of West Java, situated at around 770 m in a basin between volcanoes. Colonial Art Deco buildings, a young café and creative scene, and excursions to craters and tea plantations make the city a good stop between Jakarta and Central Java.
Bandung has around 2.5 million inhabitants and, thanks to its elevated location, is cooler than Jakarta. During the colonial era, the city was nicknamed “Paris van Java”; Gedung Sate and many Art Deco buildings on Jalan Braga and Jalan Asia Afrika date from this period. The Asia-Africa Conference was held here in 1955. The city is a university hub and known for outlet shopping, cafes, and street food. To the north lies the volcano Tangkuban Perahu, to the south the crater lake Kawah Putih. Traffic is heavy, so allow plenty of time for weekend excursions.
The historic center is around Jalan Asia Afrika and Jalan Braga. To the north, around Dago, you'll find cafes, universities, and the way to the mountains.
