Pangandaran is West Java's most important seaside resort on its south coast. It is situated on a narrow land bridge between two beaches, culminating in a forested peninsula with a nature reserve extending into the sea.
Pangandaran is especially popular with families from Bandung and Jakarta, and quiet during the week. High waves roll in on the West Beach, while fishing boats launch from the East Beach. The Pananjung Peninsula is a nature park with forests, caves, monkeys, and deer. Worthwhile excursions include the river canyon Green Canyon and the surf beach Batu Karas further west. Within the town, you can get around on foot, by bicycle, or becak; for the surroundings, rent a scooter. When swimming, be mindful of currents, as the surf on the south coast is powerful.
