Agios Nikolaos

Agios Nikolaos is the capital of the Lasithi regional unit in eastern Crete and is located on Mirabello Bay. The town's focal point is the small, deep Lake Voulismeni, which is connected to the harbour by a canal.

Town by the LakeThe town is home to around 13,600 people, with approximately 21,500 in the wider municipality. The centre clusters around Lake Voulismeni with its cafés, fishing boats and a small park; from here, a canal and port lead to Mirabello Bay. Most paths in the centre are best explored on foot.Beaches and ExcursionsThe small beach Kitroplateia is located right in the town, with further coves like Ammos and Almyros nearby. From the harbour, boats depart for Spinalonga and Elounda; inland lie the village of Kritsa and the ancient city of Lato.

The center of Agios Nikolaos is small and clustered around Lake Voulismeni and the harbor. South of it, the promenade and residential streets stretch towards Kitroplateia Bay; to the north, the coastal road heads towards Elounda.

Lake Voulismeni

The circular lake, approximately 137 meters in diameter and up to 48.8 meters deep, forms the city's center. Originally freshwater, it has been connected to the harbor since a canal's construction between 1867 and 1871. Fishing boats, cafés, and a small park with a path and amphitheater line its banks. On Orthodox Easter night, the entire city celebrates here with fireworks.

Agios Nikolaos Archaeological Museum

The museum on Konstantinou Palaiologou Street was founded in 1969 and reopened in 2024 after extensive renovation. It displays finds from East Crete, including the Early Minoan Goddess of Myrtos dating from around 2500 to 2300 BC. A large section features ceramics, bronze tools, and fishhooks from the cemetery of Agia Fotia. Also notable is a skull from the 1st century AD, found with a coin as ferry fare for Charon.

Kitroplateia Beach

Kitroplateia is a small city beach in central Agios Nikolaos, a short walk southeast of Voulismeni Lake. It's right on the town's waterfront. For a quick dip between a city stroll and museum visit, you needn't leave town.

Byzantine Church of Agios Nikolaos

The small domed church on Nissi Peninsula north of center named the town. Dating from after the 7th century, it’s one of Crete’s oldest. Geometric and plant ornaments of the Iconoclasm; later, Pantocrator and Ascension frescoes were added. The church was repaired after the 1303 earthquake.

Pelagos

Pelagos is set in an early 20th-century townhouse near Lake Voulismeni, with courtyard dining. The cuisine focuses on fish and seafood, plus Cretan specialties.

Migomis Piano Restaurant

Migomis is located in an 1890s building on the cliff above Lake Voulismeni. The cuisine reinterprets Greek and Mediterranean dishes, and a pianist plays daily in the evenings. Open seasonally from April to October.

Restaurant on Akti Pagalou waterfront road south of the port of Agios Nikolaos. The menu features Greek cuisine, with grilled octopus often mentioned.

Food and Drink

Around the lake and harbour, tavernas and cafés line up. Slightly off the beaten path, in the streets on the hillside, are local eateries also frequented by locals. Their menus feature fish from Mirabello Bay and classics of Cretan cuisine.

Kalitsounia

These small dough pockets are filled with Mizithra or other fresh cheese, sometimes with herbs. They come baked or fried, savory or with honey as a sweet dish.

Dakos

The barley rusk with grated tomatoes, cheese, olive oil, and oregano is the typical Cretan appetizer salad. It's on nearly every tavern menu on the island.

Tsikoudia

The Cretan pomace brandy, usually known as Raki on the island, often appears after dinner as a gesture of hospitality. It is frequently served with fruit or a small sweet.

History and Culture

Antiquity and NamingThe town is partly built upon the remains of the ancient city of Lato pros Kamara, particularly known for its extensive Roman-era cemetery. It takes its name from the small Byzantine church of Agios Nikolaos on the Nissi peninsula. On Venetian maps, the port was called Porto di San Nicolo.The Lake and EasterLake Voulismeni was originally a freshwater lake. The first canal to the sea was dug between 1867 and 1871; French troops expanded it from 1905 to 1907. According to legend, the goddess Athena bathed here. On Orthodox Easter Eve, the town gathers by the lake, and at midnight, there's a fireworks display.

Travel and Exploration

ArrivalAgios Nikolaos is east of Heraklion and well-connected by public buses. From Heraklion, you can also reach the town by rental car via the North Coast Road.LocallyThe center around the lake and port is compact and walkable. Boats for Spinalonga and Elounda depart from the port. Kritsa and Lato are accessible by bus, taxi, or rental car.

Spinalonga

The small island with its Venetian fortress lies in Elounda Bay. From the port in Agios Nikolaos, excursion boats sail across.

Elounda

The place is located north of Agios Nikolaos on the bay of the same name and is accessible via the coastal road or by boat. From here, the crossing to Spinalonga is shorter.

Kritsa and Lato

The mountain village of Kritsa lies inland above Mirabello Bay, near the ruins of the ancient city of Lato. You can reach both by bus, taxi, or rental car.
