Located on the south coast of Crete, Matala is primarily known for its distinctive bay and the caves carved into the rock. These served as dwellings as early as the Neolithic Age, later as Roman tombs, and in the 1960s and 70s, they were a retreat for the international hippie movement. The former alternative culture still shapes the relaxed atmosphere of the fishing village today, without losing its authenticity. Besides the main beach, Matala offers access to the more secluded Red Beach, which you reach via a short hiking trail and which is ideal for quieter hours. The best time to visit the caves is early morning, to explore the historical site in peace. In the evening, the view of the sunset over the Libyan Sea is worthwhile.
